Becoming a member
Joining Southend Libraries is free for everyone. You can join at any branch of the library by presenting proof of your name and current address. There is no minimum age for joining, but those under the age of 16 years require a signature from their parent or guardian.

You may join the library online by clicking on the button below after you have read and accepted the membership conditions. Your membership card can be collected from any branch of Southend Libraries with a current form of identification showing the name and address you provided on the online membership application form.

Conditions of membership

  • To borrow items you must present your library membership card.
  • DVDs are available for a one week loan and free. Spoken Word on CD are available for a 3 week loan and are chargeable, all other items are free and may be borrowed for three weeks.
  • You may borrow up to fourteen items on your card. These can be borrowed from and returned to any branch of Southend Libraries.
  • Items may be renewed up to seven times. Staff are happy to renew items over the telephone during opening hours, please have your library card number on hand. If a reservation has been placed on an item you have on loan a renewal is not permitted.
  • Items may be returned at any branch of Southend Library. After hour book drops are available at all branches. Items left in the book drop after hours are regarded as having been returned on the next open day.
  • Overdue fines are charged for the late return of items.
  • Membership is suspended if you have overdues items and outstanding charges.
  • Renewal and overdue notices are a courtesy reminder.
  • A reservation and/or inter-library loan service is available for those items which are loanable, available at another branch or at another library service. A small fee is charged for this service. You can place your own reservations for most items via the public access catalogues at our branches or through the Southend Libraries online catalogue.
  • All costs incurred by the Library due to items lost or damaged whilst in your care must be reimbursed.
  • All reservation, inter-library loan and lost membership card charges are non-refundable.
  • If you change your address or name please notify us immediately.
  • Please report lost cards to the library immediately. You will be held responsible for any items borrowed before the loss is reported.
  • Southend Libraries are part of the SELMS consortium. Your borrower record will be held on a shared database but your details will only be available to staff in another authority if you choose to borrow or reserve items from that authority. All data is held strictly in accordance with the requirements of current Data Protection legislation. If you would like more information please see our privacy policy
