Books
Fred Spalding of Chelmsford (1858-1947) was the leading local photographer of his day. When his father set up shop, the charge of the Light Brigade was still fresh in the public mind. When Fred died, the Second World War had been fought and won. Their work is now a priceless record of the changing face of mid-Essex, and the changing lives of its people. This selection of nearly 200 of their finest photographs, from the Spalding Archive in the Essex Record Office, is introduced by local historian Stan Jarvis.
