The merchant was John Hende, a member of the Worshipful Company of Drapers who rose from obscure origins to become Mayor of London and an immensely rich trader. He lent Richard II vast sums of money, and was the friend of fellow Mayor Richard (Dick) Whittington and the poet Geoffrey Chaucer. His country home was Bradwell Hall near Coggeshall, one of the many Essex manor houses ne bought with his business profits.
