Southend and the Great War 1914-1918

Books
Southend and the Greatr War explores the effect that the First World War had on Southend and its people, and the part that those people played in the war, both at home and abroad, but concentrates on the Home Front in many of its aspects. These include the effect of the first air raids on the town and its inhabitants, and how both defensive and 'early warning' measures were put in place by the people of Southend. The vitally important roles that both Rochford Aerodrome and Shoebury Garrison played in the war and defence of the nation are explored. The increasingly important role played by women in the workforce is featured as well as the part that theatres and cinemas played in entertainment, propaganda and fund raising.
