The Essex Yeomanry was first raised as a regiment at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. In November 1914 it was sent overseas and served with much distinction in France and Belgium until April 1918. The Regiment was then dissolved and a squadron attached to each of the three regular cavalry regiments of the 1st Cavalry Brigade. With this formation the majority of the officers and men served for the remainder of the war and took part in the march to the Rhine.
