Books
Summer, AD 69. The emperor Otho is dead by his own hand and his rival Aulus Vitellius now sits upon the imperial throne. However, a new challenge has arisen: the legions of Titus Flavius Vespasian have declared him Emperor. In the dry heat of an August morning, a soldier awaits execution. He is Gaius Valerius Verrens and he has been wrongly accused of cowardice. Then he is suddenly offered a reprieve. In return he must pledge allegiance to Vespasian, and persuade his old friend Vitellius to stand down for the greater good of Rome, its people and the Empire. Branded a traitor, his loyalties divided but tired of war, Valerius accepts. But to fulfil his duty, he must first fight his way to the heart of an empire mired in mistrust, corruption, betrayal and blood-letting...
