The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is a new planning charge introduced by Government which allows local authorities to raise funds from developers who wish to build in their areas. This money can be used to help fund a wide range of infrastructure needed as a result of new development. This includes new road or transportation schemes, flood defences, schools, hospitals and healthcare, green spaces and leisure centres. CIL will replace, in the majority of cases, the current mechanism of securing infrastructure planning obligations through Section 106 agreements.
